Johnston House Site Master Plan, Half Moon Bay, CA

Kikuchi & Associates worked with the City of Half Moon Bay Parks and Recreation Department, the Planning Department and the Johnston House Foundation for 4 years in the development of the Site Master Plan for this historical landmark. The design program focused on the eventual conversion of the site into an educational facility recalling the historical agrarian life of the coast and region. One facet of the design called for renovating the site to its original character when constructed in 1853; locating barns, pastures, a private garden, a privy and tool shed. A contrasting facet required the accommodation of current codes for disability access and fire safety; providing for handicap parking, access ramps and fire roads. Most importantly, any visual impacts on the rural character of the site and its surrounds were strongly downplayed to either blend in or disappear from general view.
